Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Gerhard Falkner, geboren 1951, zählt zu den bedeutendsten Dichtern der Gegenwart. Er veröffentlichte zahlreiche Lyrikbände, u.a. »Hölderlin Reparatur«, für den er 2009 den Peter-Huchel-Preis erhielt, und zuletzt »Ignatien« (2014). Für seine Novelle »Bruno« wurde ihm 2008 den Kranichsteiner Literaturpreis verliehen. Nach Aufenthalten in der Villa Massimo/Casa Baldi und der Akademie Schloss Solitude war er 2013 der erste Fellow für Literatur in der neugegründeten Kulturakademie Tarabya in Istanbul und zuletzt, 2014, Stipendiat in der Villa Aurora in Los Angeles, Kalifornien. Seine Romane »Apollokalypse« (2016) und »Romeo oder Julia« (2017) standen auf der Long- bzw. Shortlist des Deutschen Buchpreises und wurden von der Kritik gefeiert. Gerhard Falkner lebt in Berlin und Bayern.

Verwirrend. Habe es nicht zu Ende gelesen

Einem Autor, der in Innsbruck auf einer Tagung weilt, fallen schwarze Haare in seiner Badewanne auf. Er denkt sofort an einen Einbruch, doch es fehlen keine Wertgegenstände, nur eine Umhängetasche mit für ihn wertvollen Notizen und entwürfen. Er reist weiter nach Moskau, auch zu einer Tagung, fühlt sich von irgendjemandem verfolgt und verbrigt die Tage mit Sex und Besäufnissen. Weiter geht es nach Barcelona, wo er sich ausgiebig mit einer Geliebten vergnügt. Da endlich, findet er eine Frau, eine ehemalige Geliebte, die ihm erklärt, ihn ermorden zu wollen, es aber doch nicht tut. Endlich wieder zu Hause in Berlin teilt ihm die Kriminalpolizei mit, dass eine Frau bei dem Versuch, in sein Hotelzimmer in Barcelona einzudringen, tödlich abgestürzt ist. Da diese Frau einen geladenen Revolver mitführte, beabsichtigte sie wohl, ihn umzubringen, und er entging diesem Attentat nur deshalb, weil er einen Tag früher als geplant abgereist war. Das ist eine unnötig lange Geschichte mit viel zu viel hohlem Gerede nur um zu zeigen, dass der Autor sehr belesen und humanistisch gebildet ist, sich auch in Mode und Kosmetik sehr gut auskennt, kurzum von Allgemeinwissen nur so sprüht. Dazu kommt immer wieder die Betonung seiner Männlichkeit, die ihn schier unwiderstehlich für Frauen macht, vom ewigen Suff gar nicht zu reden. Ich hätte daraus allenfalls eine Erzählung gemacht und nicht einen Roman voller heisser Luft.

Ein Autor auf Reisen wird Opfer einer wilden Stalkerin, die ihm aus dem Hotelzimmer sein Schlüsselbund klaut und nichts zurücklässt außer ihren langen schwarzen Haaren in der Badewanne- als hätte sie genüsslich ein Bad genommen und auf den Beraubten gewartet. Auf weiteren Reisen nach Moskau und Madrid geschehen weiter seltsame Dinge und es drängt sich die Frage in den Vordergrund, wer den Autor hier verfolgt. Und vor allem, warum.Gerhard Falkner war bereits mit „Apollokalypse“ für den Deutschen Buchpreis 2016 nominiert und mit „Romeo oder Julia“ hat er es auch 2017 wieder auf die Shortlist geschafft. Dennoch war ich von dem Roman enttäuscht, ich empfand die ganze Geschichte als sehr gewollt und schlecht konstruiert. Bis kurz vor Ende war der ganze Ablauf für mich kaum nachvollziehbar und auch nach Beendigung des Buches sind viele Elemente für mich völlig unklar. Die Story hätte diese Nebenspuren meiner Meinung nach in keiner Weise gebraucht, im Gegenteil, sie zerfaserten für mich viel zu sehr und waren schwer zu verfolgen.Als sehr positiv empfand ich hingegen Falkners Sprache. Da ich bisher noch kein Buch von ihm gelesen hatte, war es für mich eine neue Erfahrung. Mir sind viele Formulieren und Ausdrücke in Erinnerung geblieben, weil ich sie so treffen und ausgesprochen gut und bildhaft formuliert fand. Dies steht für mich leider in starkem Widerspruch zu der schwachen Story, doch ich werde einem anderen Roman von Gerhard Falkner sicher noch eine Chance geben.Mir hat „Romeo oder Julia“ nur eingeschränkt gefallen, während ich die Story abwegig und nicht klar genug strukturiert fand, um nachvollziehbar zu sein, haben mir Ausdruck und sprachliche Umsetzung sehr gut gefallen, es ist einfach Geschmackssache, ob man an „Romeo oder Julia“ Gefallen findet oder nicht.

„Als ich meine Zimmertür von außen zuzog, war dick gelb umrandet ein Throw-up draufgesprayt: Romeo oder Julia: peng, peng.“ (Zitat Seite 162)Kurt Prinzhorn ist ein Schriftsteller in einer Phase zurückgezogener, ländlicher Abgeschiedenheit, die er nur unterbricht, um zu wichtigen Literaturtreffen zu reisen, wo er als Vortragender eingeladen ist – so stehen nun Innsbruck, Moskau, Madrid auf dem Programm. Als er in Innsbruck ins Hotelzimmer zurückkehrt, steht er vor einer zwischenzeitlich benützen Badewanne, wo lange, schwarze Haare hinterlassen wurden. Sein Schlüsselbund fehlt und nach einem nächsten Einbruch auch die Tasche mit allen Notizbüchern, in denen er seine Vorträge vorbereitet hat. Weitere Zwischenfälle folgen in Moskau und Madrid – jemand verfolgt ihn, aber warum?Der Roman wird aus Sicht des Schriftstellers Kurt in der ersten Person erzählt. Dies ermöglicht es dem Autor, teilweise humorvoll überzeichnete, teilweise sarkastische Bemerkungen zur Literaturszene, Kritik an der heutigen Hochglanz-Gesellschaft, literarische Anspielungen gekonnt in die Handlung einzufügen. Seine Liebe zur Sprache zeigt der Autor aber auch in den bildhaften Beschreibungen der Hotels, Städte, Landschaften. In den Personen rund um den Schriftsteller finden sich Charaktere, wie sie heute im Kunst- und Kulturbetrieb überall anzutreffen sind.Der Hauptprotagonist Kurt scheint sich in einer Schaffenskrise zu befinden, ist aber auf Grund seiner bestehenden Werke bekannt und anerkannt. Der Leser fühlt mit ihm, besonders am Beginn der Vorkommnisse, da nicht nur er selbst zeitweise, sondern auch sein Bekanntenkreis nicht sicher ist, ob sich der Schriftsteller nicht alles nur einbildet.Beschreibungen von langen Hotelfluchten, Vorhängen, die „tosen“, dunklen Gassen und das Geheimnisvolle, Unerklärliche der Vorfälle lehnt der Autor an Elemente des Schauerromans des 19. Jhd. an. Wie auch dort, erfolgt die Aufklärung erst mit dem Schluss der Geschichte.Der Roman ist in vier Teile gegliedert: Innsbruck, Moskau, Madrid und Endstation Berlin, welche dann in bezifferte Kapitel unterteilt sind. Eine besondere Bewandtnis gibt der Autor allen 13. Kapiteln, die jeweils den Abschluss der Teile Innsbruck, Moskau und Madrid bilden, denn hier erhält der Leser Hinweise auf mögliche Erklärungen für die Vorfälle. Sehr speziell ist das Kapitel 13 Moskau, denn hier führen die sprachgewaltigen Phantasien des Autors, scheinbar völlig zusammenhanglos, uns in vergangene Jahrhunderte zurück. Im Kapitel 13 Madrid erfährt Kurt und damit auch der Leser schließlich die tatsächlichen Hintergründe und Auflösung.Ein Roman für Leser zeitgenössischer Literatur, die bereit sind, auch die Sprache an sich wirken zu lassen, teilweise lange Satzgebilde, die sich nicht einfach mal so zwischendurch lesen lassen. Dennoch empfehle ich diesen Roman auch Lesern, die einen Gegenpol zu Trivia und Fantasy suchen, einfach Lust haben, sprachliches Neuland zu erlesen.

In diesem Liederbuch findet man einige der bekanntesten Astrid Lindgren-Lieder, die einen genauso wie die Bücher und Filme durch die Kindheit begleitet haben. Manchmal hat man nicht mehr den Text im Kopf, aber die Melodien hat man doch häufig noch im Ohr. Schlägt man aber dieses Buch auf, so ist alles schnell wieder präsent. Das Buch ist schon schön anzugucken. Es ist bunt illustriert und zwar mit den Bildern, die man eben aus den Büchern kennt, wobei z.B. von Pippi Langstrumpf die aktuellen Bilder von Katrin Engelking verwendet wurden. Wenn man also die Bilder sieht, weiß man direkt zu welchem Buch bzw. welcher Buchreihe das jeweilige Lied gehört, was natürlich insbesondere bei etwas unbekannteren Liedern sehr hilfreich ist. Außerdem können so auch leseunkundige Kinder sich selber Lieder aussuchen, die man dann gemeinsam singt. Die Lieder sind mit dem Text aller Strophen, Noten und Akkorden abgedruckt. Im Anhang findet man dann auch noch eine Übersicht der Gitarrengriffe, falls man hier eine kleine Auffrischung braucht.Die Lieder wurden großzügig auf den Seiten verteilt, so dass man alles gut lesen kann und ein schöne Gesamteindruck entsteht.Es macht Spaß mit den Kindern aus diesem Buch zu singen und schnell hat man den einen oder anderen Ohrwurm vom bekannten Pippi-Lied oder von "Michel war ein Lausejunge". Noch hilfreicher beim Singen ist es, wenn man auch die dazugehörige CD besitzt. Vor allem wenn man kein Instrument beherrscht und die Lieder nicht kennt, lernt man so die Melodien am besten. Ich hätte es noch schöner gefunden, wenn die CD direkt mit dem Buch mitgeliefert werden würde. So muss man sie sich leider extra anschaffen und sie hat mittlerweile auch ein anderes Cover als das Buch. Ebenfalls etwas schade ist es, dass hier nicht alle Astrid Lindgren-Lieder aufgenommen wurden.Insgesamt gefällt mir das Liederbuch aber sehr gut. Das, was vorhanden ist, macht große Lust darauf, tief in Astrid Lindgrens Welt hineinzutauchen.

Unsere kleine 1,5 freut sich über die Musik und tanzt gerne dazu! Wenn man jedoch die originale kennt kann man leicht davon enttäuscht werden, da die Lieder nicht nur neu eingespielt sondern auch neu interpretiert sind! Einige Lieder mit starkem S-Fehler aufgenommen?

Wir haben die CD für unsere musikbegeisterten Kinder gekauft, nachdem wir in Schweden im Astrid Lindgren-Park gewesen sind. Super CD, es könnten gerne mehr Lieder sein, weil es jedesmal schade ist, wenn sie durchgelaufen ist. Unsere Kleine hat gerade erste Wörter sprechen gelernt, aber "Michi" und "Langdrumf" waren mit die Ersten, wenn sie sich diese CD gewünscht hat.

Eine tolle CD für alle, die Pippi Langstrumpf & Co mögen. Läuft bei uns raus und runter. Meine Kinder mögen sie beide sehr gern und auch wir Erwachsenen mögen sie.

Wünderschönes Buch mit allen Astrid Lindgren Geschichten; Lieder zum nachsingen. Ich bin total begeistert vom Buch. Kann ich nur empfehlen!

Leider war die Aufmachung der CD nicht wir abgebildet und auch der Inhalt nicht wie beschrieben. Es ist nur eine CD, nicht zwei wie angegeben. Liedtexte zum nachlesen sucht man auch vergebens. Schade. Die Neuaufmachung finde ich trotzdem gelungen, deshalb gibt es 3 Sterne. Schöner wäre wenn die Beschreibung und die Bilder angepasst werden.

Mir persönlich gefallen die Lieder nicht so gut. Dachte ich kaufe für meinen Sohn die CD , weil mir Astrid Lindgren nur sehr positiv bekannt ist. Ich finde die Lieder ähneln sich alle sehr.

Ich war sehr enttäuscht, als ich die CD erhalten habe. Ich hatte sie mir nur wegen der 2. intrumentalen Version gekauft, weil ich einige dieser Lieder für meine Patentochter selbst aufnehmen / singen wollte.Darüber hinaus kommt jetzt auf den "Antrag" einer Rücksendung keinerlei Reaktion mehr.Für knapp 13 Euro ist mir allerdings der Aufwand, da jetzt noch ein Fass aufzumachen, zu groß. Alles recht ärgerlich.

The first time I consciously came across Francoise Gilot was when I read a newspaper article in the Sydney Morning Herald in 2011. What caught my eye and made me read the article straight away were the photographs of the then 90 year old lady.Her personality strikes me as elegant, confident and intelligent, her life interesting, Picasso plays the most widely known but not the only part in.The book was written eleven years after she had left Picasso, she was the only woman to do so. They met in 1943, she was 21 he was 61. The book accompanies the 10 years of their relationship, the birth of their two children and their separation.For me the book is about two things: art and love.ArtWhat I found most interesting was the conversations between Gilot and Picasso about art and its creative process. Gilot explains Picasso's approach to designing an artwork, his way of thinking, his intentions and finally the process of creation. She describes in detail his techniques of painting, lithography and sculpture. I only have a very basic knowledge about art, but this book changed how I am looking at art now.LoveThe book is about absolute love, passion, happiness and sadness, exhaustion and desperation. Picasso was a very difficult person to be with and the book shows how Gilot devoted her life to him, how she dealt with his moods, how she could laugh about him and how much she loved him.Gilot is a fantastic witness of the time and her book is so much more than the story of her relationship to Picasso, it is also a historic document of that time.

die scheinbare wahrhaftigkeit der autorin ist unmittelbar und mitreissend. diese geschichte scheint zu versuchen zu erzählen das leben mit und von picasso in einem sensible objektivitet - obwohl es natürlich subjektiv geschrieben ist. man kriegt sofort mit daß das was Gilot und Picasso vereinte war "das" was alle liebende zusammenführt - und das ist immer unbeschreibbar. als die erzählung fortgeht ist es ein aber klar das das leben mit den man der Sie liebt - der verrückte, der geniale, der rührende, der schwein, der frauenheld, das kind, der solitude, der egomaniker - ist unmöglich für die sensitive und im grunde sehr starke frau die auch mit künstlerische begabung gesegnet war, als nur die stütze (in alle denkbare perspektive) zu sein für einer künstler der letzendlich auch nur ein mennsch gewesen ist...

das 14 seitige vorwort hätte sich suhrkamp eher ersparen sollen- in dem kontext erscheint es, als ob sich louis aragon wichtiger nimmt als die novelle selbst. die novelle ist gekonnt, glaubhaft und nachvollziehbar aufgebaut mit überraschenden kleinen wendungen. eine angenehme begleiterscheinung: man erfährt auch allerhand über die kriegszeit (2. weltkrieg) in kirgisien. aitmatow versteht es glänzend, einen rythmus zu erzeugen, der auf die nächste seite neugierig macht. eine sehr schöne liebesgeschichte.

After viewing the National Geographic Genius series on Picasso, I became interested in Francoise Gilot. This book is remarkable and this woman is brilliant. Her accounts of her life with Picasso, his association with other prominent artists, political figures and his philosophy on art and living, are fascinating. This book is a peek behind the curtain of the daily life of this multifaceted "genius". As far as I am concerned, Francoise Gilot is a genius in her own right. The book is well written and the stories are warmly entertaining.

A great book about living with Picasso includes her recall of many discussions about his creative process and artistic goals. If you love art history this will fascinate. If you just want to know the personal story, skip over these sections. Picasso was a very difficult person to live with but she stuck it out for 10 years; she is an artist and a lovely woman who finally found happiness with Jonas Salk. She truly is the one Picasso shouldn't have let get away, but she could only put up with so much nonsense.

A fascinating read. Can't put it down. Francoise translates Picasso very well, and as a painter, I'm soaking it up.

I am really enjoying her book much more than I did ( and I loved it then) when I read it 20 years ago. I have watched a few of her interviews on youtube now and I am really respecting her as an artist and as a woman. Fascinating story!

Honestly how Gilot remembered all that is amazing. It was written soon after leaving Picasso so that contributed to its accuracy. Sounded so logical and honest.

Warren Bennis (1925 - 2014) was an American scholar, organizational consultant, and author, who was widely regarded as the pioneer of the contemporary field of leadership. He served as Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at the University of Southern California, as chairman of the Advisory Board of the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, and as a consultant to multinational companies and governments throughout the world. In 2007, Business Week called him one of ten business school professors who have had the greatest influence on business thinking. Bennis pulled from many leaders and presents his interpretation of their advice, here, for others to follow. I tend to like his interpretation, but would like to read more of the sources. And, there were a few spots that seemed to drag a bit; but not enough to make me quit reading it. It was worth those few hard parts to get deeper.Maybe that’s a way Bennis is a good leader; he makes me want to look deeper and not just take his view as gospel. His style is easy and “alongside” rather than out-front-and-all-you-can-see-is-his-ass. This helped keep me into what he was saying.I think anyone interested in leadership for any reason could do worse than reading this book.

I disliked this book. It is clear that the author has a lot of experience, contacts, and knowledge, so he may be a good coach or advisor, but this is a book that didn't need to be published. The original layer from 1989 was unimpressive, but at least it was shorter. This new edition didn't get any better after the 2003 and 2009 revisions and additions.The book's attempt to draw conclusions from vast overviews of social and political changes falls totally flat, as it oversimplifies everything or makes unwarranted conclusions. The rambling lack of focus makes it hard to draw any lessons from it, even though clearly the people being quoted have valuable leadership experience to share.At times the feel is of a high school or college student's pastiche of quotations out of context, mixed together, trying to sound wise, and simply failing. It's a shame. I read the whole book to at least feel I had given it a fair shake. It never got any better. You can learn something from anything, so in that sense it's not an utter waste of time. But there are many other books on this topic that deserve our time more.A trivia note: John Sculley became CEO of Apple in 1983, not 1977 as the book says! That's a serious timeline problem that's obvious to anyone who is familiar with Apple's history.

This book was the rage in management back in my early days, but somehow I never got around to reading it. Was prompted to pick it up when I read an obituary for Mr. Bennis. There are a few timeless nuggets in here (i.e., Leaders must set the context for effective decisions to be made). But much of this is glory stories of what successful leaders of long ago have done. The updates from the 199x and 2008 don't bring in many of the radical changes that have occured in the world, post dot.com, 9/11, etc.....What does it take to be a leader in the current world, where political mudslinging and 7 x 24 x 365 digial exposure us the the norm. My impression is that this book is about 90% American in its orientation and messaging, so I'd expect that many of the examples used will not be fully understood by non-Americans. Finally, stories I felt that Mr. Bennis was unrealistically harsh on President Bush's leadership and political agenda. Time will provide a full judgement of Mr. Bush's legacy. Admitedly, he made mistakes, but the challenges he faced were enormous.

Updated regularly over the last 30 years, this classic by Bennis is worth reading. Part self-help book and part analysis of historical leaders within Bennis' context of development, the book focuses on the stages of leadership development. Easy to read and well researched, the book has withstood the test of time, and contains wisdom and insights for anyone studying leadership. A good read.

Note: The review that follows is of the fourth ("Twentieth Anniversary") edition that was published on March 2, 2009.Where have the 20 years gone since this book was first published? It remains among the most valuable and most influential primary sources on the subject of effective leadership at a time when the need for it has never been greater. However, although the core principles and the development of them that Warren Bennis examines in this book remain essentially the same, the perils and opportunities to which those principles can be applied throughout the global business world have increased in number as well as changed in nature since 1989. That is why Bennis felt the need to revise and update the material while adding an Epilogue.Previously, I read the first and third editions of this book and each time was reminded of a situation years ago when participants were outraged about the playing conditions on the course (perhaps Shinnicock) on which the U.S. Open golf championship was once held. The greens were too fast, the rough was too high and deep, the pin placements were "impossible," etc. After a U.S. Golf Association official was informed of the criticism, he explained that "we're not trying to embarrass the world's greatest golfers, we're trying to identify them." Bennis seems to be making the same point about how great leaders are developed. More specifically, as he and Robert Thomas assert in Geeks & Geezers (2002), there are "crucibles" from which some emerge as leaders but most others do not. They developed a theory that describes, they believe for the first time, how leaders come to be. "We believe that we have identified the process that allows an individual to undergo testing and to emerge, not just stronger, but better equipped with the tools he or she needs both to lead and to learn. It is a model that explains how individuals make meaning out of difficult events -- we call them crucibles [in italics] -- and how that process of 'meaning making' both galvanizes individuals and gives them their distinctive voice." They cite and then discuss a number of individuals who underwent that process and, as a result, eventually became highly-effective leaders. Bennis and Thomas conclude their book with an especially apt quotation from Edith Wharton: "In spite of illness, in spite even of the arch enemy, sorrow, one can remain alive long past the usual state of integration if one is unafraid of change, insatiable in intellectual curiosity, interested in big things, and happy in small ways." These are indeed words to live and grow by for both Geeks and Geezers.Those who aspire to become leaders - or to become more effective leaders - will find much of value in this latest edition even as some readers will question Bennis' selection of at least a few of the exemplary leaders such as Herb Alpert, Norman Lear, and Sydney Pollack. However, my own opinion is that effective leaders can - and should - be developed at all levels and in all areas, not only within an organization but indeed throughout an entire society. I do agree with other reviewers that some of Bennis' social commentary indicates a political bias that is irrelevant to his stated objectives. Granted, Harry Truman once described politics as "the art of getting things done" and great leaders are certainly results-driven pragmatists. In that sense, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Mohandas Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela (to name but a few) were master politicians. That said, each demonstrated most (if not all) of the qualities that Bennis admires, notably a compelling ("guiding") vision, a passion for excellence, and impeccable integrity. None of those qualities is political in nature. However, all of the aforementioned leaders considered them essential to achieving political objectives.In the Epilogue, Bennis recalls an incident that occurred in 1945. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had recently died and "crowded, grieving masses surged along Constitution Avenue in April 1945, waiting for his funeral cortege to pass by. As his hearse neared, a well-dressed, middle-aged man standing in the throng fell to his knees, sobbing desperately until finally regaining his composure. A stranger by his side asked, `Did you know the President?' The man could barely reply. `No . . . but he knew me.'" What's Bennis' point? To become a great leader, you must "know" those whom you ask to follow you. Agreeing with Abigail Adams that "great necessities call forth great leaders," Bennis notes that with the inauguration of a new U.S. president in 2009, "it is easy to forget that we need more than one gifted leader at a time. At the founding of the United States, when our population was less than 4 million, we had six towering leaders: Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton, Madison, Franklin, and Adams. Now that we number more than 304 million people, we are surely capable of yielding at least 600 world-class leaders in this country alone."When concluding the Epilogue with a question, "Will you be one of them?" Warren Bennis offers both an invitation and a challenge, and he does so at a time when the need for more and more effective leaders was never greater.

By far the best recent biography of the explorer. Crane charts a discerning course between the “Heroic Legend” of Scott’s Last Expedition and its leader’s overzealous debunkers and defenders. While acknowledging the justice of most criticisms of Scott’s naval methods, Crane rescues him from the outright character assassination begun by Roland Huntford. In analyzing Scott’s leadership, Crane contrasts the inexperienced but confident young officer of the Discovery Expedition with the man who returned to Antarctica a decade latter, beset by family and financial worries, unsure of himself in his strange marriage, and embittered by his rivalry with Shackleton. That this man lost the Pole to Amundsen was almost predetermined; yet, Crane accepts the conclusion reached by Susan Solomon and Scott’s own Message to the Public: that extraordinary weather on the Barrier, not his expedition’s flaws, killed Scott and his companions. To this biographer, Robert Falcon Scott’s idealism—realized fully only in his death—redeemed him as a man, if not quite as an explorer. Whether or not the reader finds Crane’s arguments convincing, his book is meticulously researched and marvelously written. Only its relative paucity of illustrations, given the wealth of photographs available, was a minor disappointment

The book is dreadful. It continually refers to other expeditions that the average reader will not know about. The writing is random and its impossible to follow the thread. There are also many deliberate and irrelevant literary references just inserted to be clever. A great subject that I w\as looking forward to, treated very badly by a pseudo intellectual. Try as I might I could not finish it.

I particularily like the subtitle to this book, 'a life of courage and tragedy.'Scott was undoubtedly courageous. He could not have been otherwise. On the other hand, his courage and drive to get to the South Pole was not exactly balanced by experience or perhaps by common sense. There's an old saying that if you wanted to get somewhere like the South Pole, Scott would have been a good leader to follow, but if you wanted to get back, then other expedition leaders like Shackleton would be your first choice. Shackleton's quotation: 'Better a live donkey than a dead lion.' Consistent with this, Scott got to the South Pole, Shackleton didn't. Scott didn't get back.In this book, the author is clearly a deep admirer of Scott. And indeed he did great things. Coming from a humble beginning he appeared driven to accomplish things, and he did. He was a complicated man, and Mr. Crane's access to the family papers and Scott's letters give a view that is perhaps more balanced than what we have seen before.If nothing else, Mr. Crane is an excellent writer and the story becomes one of those can't put down books.

David Crane shows how the death of the explorer Captain Scott galvanized the UK on the edge of World War I, but he qualifies British response to the tragedy by pointing up that, despite the weight of popular opinion, the pre-war Edwardian years were not exactly the Golden Age of empire the way they are nowadays painted. Crane's life of Scott is in every way a re-revisionist biography, kicking against what he feels has been the unfair denigration of Scott's life and deeds over the past thirty years.Sometimes this approach works, sometimes it doesn't. Through meticulous handling of evidence, he tells the story without a hint of strain, and yet sometimes whole paragraphs stop the action to argue that history has shafted Scott once again. A prototypical Englishman in the days when "God was an Englishman," Scott has suffered from unthinking backlhas, or so says Crane, and indeed he says it about four hundred times so that, frankly, I began to sympathize with Scott's attackers a bit, for no one's that perfect.Indeed Crane admits as much, citing his rivalry with Shackleton and then finally with Amundsen as proof, but in each case, the other man is deeply at fault and Scott was just trying to muddle through on Naval smarts and years of experience leading men. It was a time for heroics, and something in the air (together with a thriving media culture) made heroes out of the most unlikely souls. England expected every man to do his duty, and alas so did Norway and Amundsen came home with the gold, so to speak, whereas the Englishmen after the same glittering prize were all dead by the time Amundsen returned home. "The Englishmen, the goal accompished," bleated the press, "lay quiet in the snows. Through the months since . . . while wives and friends set forth for meetings and counted time, they lay oblivious. All was over for them long ago."Beyond the heroics of the era, Crane attributes the legend of Captain Scott to his indispitable skill as a prose writer. There is something macabre about the veneration given to his last journal, found by the relief party, but it's a bizarre twist totally understandable in the context, the words that live on after the hand that wrote them has grown cold and still. Without that last journal, its reinscription of subaltern heroics, its narrative of deprivation and memory and love, how else would Scott be remembered? In this regard Crane has an interesting passage about the way in which Westminster Abbey had its own little competition going on with St. Paul's Cathedral about which site had the most pomp and had the most heroes of empire commemmorated there.

Belinda was the richest woman in Dawson at her Peak and made small fortune in Fairbanks. She sold merchandise to miners and had opened two hotels one at Forks and Dawson. She had a Saint Bernard named Nero after the dog food brand Nero. Her dog sled team consisted of one dog "Nero", that would take her to Forks twenty miles down stream to send telegraphs. I just wish she would have nevered married the fake Count. Belinda and her sister Mary opened the first bank in Fairbanks, The Dome City Bank. She Knocked out a Man once in Dawson with one punch and Horse Whipped a Man in Seattle for wrongdoing her sister in Fainbanks business banking. Her house is still lived in Yakima, WA. What a great lady!
